Clerville in den 1960ern: Eine unheimliche Reihe von Verbrechen versetzt das ganze Land in Angst und Schrecken. Immer wieder werden den Bürgern ihre wertvollsten Besitztümer gestohlen. Doch damit nicht genug. Denn der Diabolik (Luca Marinelli) genannte Täter ist absolut gewissenlos und geht dabei über Leichen. Egal ob Privatperson oder Polizist – wer sich ihm in den Weg stellt, hat sein Leben verwirkt. Niemand hat eine Ahnung, wer sich hinter dem Pseudonym verstecken könnte. Allein der exzellent geschulte Intellekt von Inspektor Ginko (Valerio Mastandrea) stellt eine Gefahr für den Verbrecher dar. Ist der Ermittler ihm doch bereits dichter auf den Fersen, als ihm liebt ist. Sich deshalb allerdings zurückzunehmen oder einfach unterzutauchen, kommt für Diabolik nicht in Frage. Denn just ist die ebenso schöne wie reiche Witwe Lady Eva Kant (Miriam Leone) aus dem Ausland zurückgekehrt und mit ihr ein riesiger Diamant, auf den Diabolik schon lange ein Auge geworfen hat.

The real problem shown in the movie is the lack of freedoms and the imposed self-censorship in a standstill and full of conventions society.
