The world is at war but one woman is fighting her own
1918: Während draußen in Europa der erste Weltkrieg tobt, lebt Erna Jensen (Trine Dyrholm) ihr ruhiges Leben in Süderjütland mit ihrem einfältigen Sohn Kalle (Sylvester Byder). Eines Tages klopft der Dorfpolizist Meier (Ulrich Thomsen) an ihre Tür, um Kalle zum Kriegsdienst für das deutsche Kaiserreich einzuziehen, dem Süderjütland angehört. Erna jedoch hat nicht vor, ihren einzigen Sohn in den Schützengraben zu schicken. Sie muss selbst aktiv werden, um Kalle vor dem sicheren Tod zu bewahren. Als einfacher Soldat verkleidet zieht Erna zusammen mit Kallen und einem Regiment süderjütischer Landsleute zur Front. Der Soldat Anton Seiersen (Anders W. Berthelsen) erweckt neue Gefühle in Erna zum Leben - und ihre dunkle Vergangenheit kommt ans Licht und verändert alles.

Separated from her husband, Erna and her daughter are dispatched together with other women and children to remote Siberian territories. Despite hunger, fear and brutal humiliation Erna never in next fifteen years loses her sense of freedom and hope of returning to homeland.

Filmed on location in Iceland in summer 2020, it features the contributions of an unparalleled creative collective including ground-breaking choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir, the Iceland Dance Company and cinematographer Thor Eliasson. The music in the film builds upon Ólafur’s critically praised new album ‘some kind of peace’ and was performed and recorded live on set, representing a constant cinematic conversation between picture and music. Vincent Moon’s intimate cinematic vision brings this layered metaphorical world to life as we see Ólafur’s music manifested and symbolised all around him through set design, lighting and dance. Through themes of rituals, relationships and exploration of our inner landscapes, this is a film focused on how we all move forward.
