Der Film porträtiert das größte Verwilderungsgebiet der Alpen, das sich in den vergangenen 20 Jahren zu einem wildromantischen Urwald entwickelt hat. Trotz Kritik von Anwohnern wurde die Natur sich selbst überlassen. In diesem riesigen, unberührten Gebiet kommunizieren Bäume untereinander, streifen Luchse majestätisch anmutend am Waldboden umher und springen Gelbhalsmäuse zehn Mal so weit wie sie lang sind. Seit sich der Mensch aus der oberösterreichischen Region zurückgezogen hat, reguliert der Wald sich selbst in einem dramatischen Kreislauf von Werden und Vergehen. Doch was auf den ersten Blick wie Zerstörung und Verwüstung aussieht, wirkt in der Natur als Quelle der Erneuerung und beschleunigt die Verwandlung zurück zum Urwald. Das deutlichste Symbol dafür ist die Rückkehr der Luchse.
