Vietnam, 1965: Zu einer Zeit, in der noch lange kein Ende des verlustreichen Vietnamkriegs in Sicht ist, soll die Truppe von Private Johannes Schenke in den Tiefen der Wälder des Landes eine abtrünnige Special-Forces-Einheit ausfindig machen, die im vietnamesischen Dschungel grausam vor sich hin mordet. Und tatsächlich dauert es nicht lange, bis Schenke und seine Kameraden die Wege des psychopathischen Special-Forces-Kommandanten Ranger und seiner nicht minder brutalen Männer kreuzen, die die Eindringlinge gefangen nehmen und foltern. Schenke gelingt es allerdings zu fliehen, woraufhin er versucht, seine Kameraden zu befreien und Rangers tödlichem Treiben ein Ende zu bereiten. Doch geben sich der und seine wahnsinnigen Gefolgsleute nicht so einfach geschlagen...

Ein Ort im Schwebezustand zwischen Realität und Fantasie, an dem die normalen Regeln von Raum und Zeit außer Kraft gesetzt sind. Seine Frau (Ana Mayo) folgt ihm in diese Parallelwelt, um ihn zu retten. In dieser tristen, surrealen Welt herrscht ein skrupellose, rollschuhtragende Königin (Marina Gatell), die die Macht besitzt die Wirklichkeit nach ihren Vorstellungen zu manipulieren. Sie gestaltet ihr reich als verrückte Schachpartie ohne wirklich klare Regeln, in einer postapokalyptischen Dystopie von Herrschaft und Unterwerfung. Nach ihrer Laune werden ihre Untertanen, die Schachfiguren regelmässig bestraft, gequält oder eingesperrt. In dem ganzen apokalyptischen Wahnsinn und der Hoffnung auf Rettung, stellt sich immer wieder die Frage wer von wem in dieser Schachpartie gelenkt wird, wer ist Bauer; Läufer oder Königin.
