Der Dokumentarfilm "Paul Simon - Under African Skies" begleitet ihn auf seiner Rückkehr nach Südafrika und erzählt die turbulente Entstehungsgeschichte des legendären Albums. Nach einer Südafrika-Reise fasste Simon den Entschluss, gemeinsam mit schwarzen Musikern von dort ein Album aufzunehmen, auf dem südafrikanische Rhythmen und Klänge mit US-amerikanischem Folkrock verschmelzen. Daraus entstand ein musikalisches Meisterwerk, mit dem sich Simon aber auch direkt in politisches Kreuzfeuer begab: Man warf ihm vor, den Kulturboykott zu unterlaufen, der von den Vereinten Nationen über Südafrika verhängt worden war, um Druck auf das Apartheidregime auszuüben. Er wurde zeitweise sogar auf die schwarze Liste von ANC und UN gesetzt. Die Kontroversen konnten dem kometenhaften Aufstieg des Albums nicht wirklich etwas anhaben. 1986 verkaufte sich "Graceland" weltweit über 14 Millionen Mal und wurde von der Kritik hochgelobt.
