Im 18. Jahrhundert wird in Paris Jean-Baptiste Grenouille mit einer sensorischen Anomalie geboren – er besitzt einen einmaligen Geruchssinn. Als Jugendlicher tötet Grenouille unwillentlich ein Mädchen und stellt fest, dass ihr Duft nach ihrem Tod verschwindet. Dies erweckt seinen Wunsch, Düfte dauerhaft konservieren zu können. Über Umwege gerät Grenouille an den Parfümeur Guiseppe Baldini, bei dem er sodann in die Lehre geht, um die Kunst des Konservierens von Düften zu erlernen. Im Gegenzug profitiert Baldini vom Talent des jungen Grenouille, jede Zutat eines Parfüms zu erriechen, sie blind mischen und verfeinern zu können. Grenouille verfolgt große Ziele – er will den wunderbarsten Duft der Welt herstellen und reist dafür nach Grasse, der Hauptstadt der Parfümeure. Auf seinem Weg dorthin findet er die passende Blume: Laure, die Tochter des wohlhabenden Antoine Richis. Plötzlich kommt es in der Gegend von Grasse zu einer Reihe von Todesfällen unter jungen, hübschen Mädchen …

The film starts with the main character Laura, a young woman with advanced cancer, entering quite upset the home of her parents and claiming to have stopped chemo therapy and having left her husband. The worried parents call the other three adult daughters into the house and they arrive one by one. For the first time in 6 years the entire family is united again. The characters are drawn as tensions rise from old conflicts and as the situation sinks in that Laura might be terminally ill. The movie eventually shifts from a lively sometimes comical beginning into the serious theme of dying and does handle this quite tactfully and moving. While the film touches on many areas surrounding death (including religion, graveyard, care, eutanasia) the main focus is on the transformation of the characters that are thrown out of their busy lifes into this situation, eventually accepting it and dealing with it.

However, the honeymoon proves short-lived, and Ida's presence creates a rift between Otto and Leo, as the latter sets up his own concern, raising koi with his new bride, Yoko (Young-Shin Kim).
