From his village in northern Senegal, Yao is a 13-year-old boy ready to do anything to meet his hero: Seydou Tall, a famous French actor. Invited to Dakar to promote his new book, the latter goes to his country of origin for the first time. To fulfill his dream, the young Yao organizes his fugue and brave 387 kilometers alone to the capital. Touched by this child, the actor decides to flee his obligations and to accompany him home. But on the dusty and uncertain roads of Senegal, Seydou understands that while rolling towards the village of the child, it also rolls towards its roots.

Yao and Moroccan Rachid arrive illegally in Valencia, Spain, and separate. Yao sells pirated DVDs in the street and wanders disconsolately around the barrio until he glimpses divorcee Maria Luisa working in her boutique. High-strung and irritable, Maria lives with her gay son, Rober, who, like many other things in life, is a disappointment to her. Rachid, meanwhile, is doing just fine working as a hairstylist in a beauty salon; Rober is hopelessly in love with him. When Yao starts sleeping in Rober's flat, a confrontation between him and Maria suddenly becomes inevitable, and when it comes, what could have been an embarrassment is actually handled with grace.

Yao und May, beide Waisen, wachsen bei einer Familie in Moskau auf. Später als sie erwachsen und auch noch in einander verliebt sind, werden sie Zeuge einiger Morde, ausgeführt von Killern des "800 Drachen" Kults. Weniger später wird Yao auch noch von diesem Kult nach HK entführt, einer Gehirnwäsche unterzogen, seiner Erinnerungen an May beraubt und selbst zum Killer ausgebildet. May bleibt zurück, kann aber später nach Amerika fliehen. Jahre später treffen sich May und Yao, als er gerade einen Anschlag auf einen Geschäftsmann verübt, in HK wieder. May, die die wahre Identität des Killers kennt, muss für ihr Wissen eigentlich sterben. Doch Yao widersetzt sich den Regeln des "800 Drachen" Kults, kommen doch seine Erinnerungen an seine alte Liebe May langsam zurück. Von nun an, werden die beiden nicht nur von den "800 Drachen" sondern auch von der Polizei und der Yakuza verfolgt, mit der sich Yao kurz zuvor angelegt hat.

"Bis dann, mein Sohn" ist meisterhaftes Kino, ein zutiefst berührendes Familienepos über Freundschaft und Veränderung, Verlust, Trauer und neue Hoffnung – und nicht zuletzt die Geschichte einer lebenslangen Liebe, die das Versprechen von den guten und den schlechten Tagen auf trotz allem beglückende Weise einlöst. Das Leben Yaojuns und Liyuns in Südchina zu Beginn des neuen Jahrtausends ist der perspektivische Fluchtpunkt der Narration. Von hier aus erzählt der Film ihr Leben im Wesentlichen chronologisch, bevor er im letzten Teil ins Jahr 2011 springt: Ein Weben der Erinnerung, dessen Chronologie durch den Unfalltod Xingxings durchbrochen wird. Dieser Verlust ist zu groß, als dass sich die Erinnerungssplitter nahtlos in die lineare Zeit einfügen ließen. Das Vergehen der Zeit wird spürbar im Heranwachsen der Kinder, in den Spuren, die das Alter in die Gesichter eingräbt, in der äußeren Sichtbarkeit der Umwälzungen, die China während dieser Zeitspanne erlebt.

Singapore, the present day. Mai Wei (Mark Lee), a successful branch manager for slimming company Natural Beauty, is sacked for cutting corners in the name of profit and attracting the ire of customers. Enraged, he sets up a rival company, My Way Slimming Centre, with several Natural Beauty employees, including Jie (Jeremy Chan), younger brother of his wife Zu Er (Yeo Yann Yann). As Natural Beauty continues to expand, Mai Wei goes on the offensive, licensing a herbal slimming pill, Dadavianxiaovoo, that contains a banned substance. As his company's image representative he chooses the massively overweight Wang Yao Yao (Tay Yin Yin), daughter of his favourite wonton noodle stall owner (Wang Lei), and feeds her the pills in large doses. Meanwhile, Zu Er, who's desperate to have a child after eight years of marriage, starts believing the gods have cursed them because of her husband's unscrupulous business practices.
