Der Ausdruck spielt an auf die besondere Fingerfertigkeit, die man benötigt, um sich Portemonnaies aus fremder Leute Taschen herauszupicken … und möglicherweise auch auf die Notwendigkeit, im Falle der Entdeckung rasch auf und davon zu fliegen.Kei ist einer dieser „Spatzen“, und ein sehr professioneller. Zusammen mit drei Partnern lebt er ganz gut davon, im Straßengewühl von Hongkong tief in die Taschen ahnungsloser Passanten zu greifen. Für Kei reicht es jedenfalls zu einem sorgenfreien Leben. Wenn er nicht gerade seinem Broterwerb nachgeht, fährt er gern mit seinem Fahrrad durch die Stadt, um mit seiner alten Rolleiflex-Kamera Straßenszenen zu fotografieren. Eines Tages taucht dabei die umwerfend schöne Chun Lei in seinem Sucher auf. Kei ist fasziniert.

Die Tochter des Bürgermeisters ist soeben nach langjähriger Abwesenheit auf die Insel zurückgekehrt und soll nun auch traditionsgemäß verkuppelt werden. Während bereits wertvolle Zeit verrinnt und die Konkurrenz um Elena wächst, hat Marcello endlich die perfekte Geschenkidee. Aber an das Geschenk zu kommen, ist gar nicht so einfach. Schon bald sieht er sich in Tauschgeschäfte mit dem ganzen Dorf verwickelt, denn jeder will etwas, was der andere hat.

In dieser frustrierenden Ereignislosigkeit kommt der Klippenabsturz des alten Zacharias gerade recht. Ein Unfall, sind die Dorfbewohner überzeugt, doch Leonidas weiß es besser und findet in der schönen Angeliki eine Insulanerin, die seinen Verschwörungstheorien zumindest Gehör schenkt.
