Tout est dit dans le titre et pourtant si peu. Un désert, une ville recluse. Un type genre pistolero, tout de noir vêtu, traîne ses longues jambes flegmatiques… C'est Van. Van est la personne qui peut en surprendre plus d'un. Quand il débarque dans l'église pour demander son chemin et qu'il voit une petite fille se faire descendre, on s'attend à ce qu'il s'énerve. Même pas ! Il s'excuse. L'antihéros par excellence. Il prend à contre-pied l'audience. Par contre quand sa vie est menacée, c'est une autre affaire… Ce héros n'est pas normal. Rien qu'à la manière dont il se bat par exemple ! Mais bien d'autres preuves pointent leur nez à mesure qu'avance l'intrigue… Dans un univers où la lame en découd avec l'arme à feu, où les chevaux côtoient les méchas, Van poursuit sa recherche de l'Homme aux Serres de Fer.
