Cronenberg's speculative historical work draws inspiration from the anatomical waxworks at the La Specola museum in Florence, Italy. These wax models, traditionally used for medical demonstrations, are given a new perspective in the film. Cronenberg's work reveals the vibrant and surprising aspects of these female wax corpses, which were previously seen as static and serious. As David Cronenberg explains: “The Specola wax figures were created as a teaching tool, capable of revealing the mysteries of the human body to those who could not access … real cadavers held in universities and hospitals. In their attempt to create whole, partially dissected figures, whose body language and facial expression did not show suffering or agony … the sculptors ended up producing living characters apparently overcome by ecstasy. It was this surprising stylistic choice that captured my imagination: what if it was the dissection itself that induced that tension, that almost religious rapture?”

Chine, 1936. C’est à ce moment que le Grand maître Baosen, à la tête de l’Ordre des Arts Martiaux Chinois, cherche son successeur. Pour sa cérémonie d’adieux, il se rend à Foshan, avec sa fille Gong Er, elle‐même maître du style Ba Gua et la seule à connaître la figure mortelle des 64 mains. Lors de cette cérémonie, Ip Man affronte les grand maîtres du Sud et fait alors la connaissance de Gong Er en qui il trouve son égal. Très vite l’admiration laisse place au désir et dévoile une histoire d’amour impossible. Peu de temps après, le Grand maître Baosen est assassiné par l’un de ses disciples, puis, entre 1937 et 1945, l’occupation japonaise plonge le pays dans le chaos.

Malgré les réticences de son fils Nejat, Ali, veuf, décide de vivre avec Yeter, une prostituée d'origine turque comme lui. À Hambourg, Ayten sympathise avec Lotte, une étudiante allemande aussitôt séduite par le charme et l'engagement politique de la jeune Turque. Lotte propose même à Ayten de l'héberger chez elle, malgré les réticences de sa mère, Susanne. Arrêtée et placée en détention, Ayten est finalement reconduite à la frontière puis incarcérée en Turquie. Sur un coup de tête, Lotte décide de tout abandonner et de se rendre en Turquie.
