The exiled Austro-German musician and composer Artur Schnabel was a giant of his time, but in Germany today he is nearly forgotten. Pianist and Schnabel devotee Markus Pawlik (in collaboration with baritone Dietrich Henschel and the Szymanowski String Quartet) brings Artur Schnabel's greatest compositions back to Berlin with a filmed commemorative concert. Along the way, Pawlik visits the places, landscapes, and history that shaped Schnabel's life and music. "Artur Schnabel: No Place of Exile" rediscovers an essential artist displaced by the catastrophe of the two World Wars and the Holocaust and inspired by the possibilities of modernism.

Ihr Ehemann Jean (Alain Artur) bereitet das Festessen vor, die beiden Söhne sind gekommen, Vincent (Cédric Kahn) mit Frau und Kindern und Romain (Vincent Macaigne) mit neuer Freundin. Im Garten vor dem Haus wird die Tafel gedeckt und die Enkelkinder proben ein Stück für die Jubilarin. Ein plötzlich einsetzender Platzregen bleibt nicht die einzige Überraschung. Völlig unerwartet erscheint die älteste Tochter Claire (Emmanuelle Bercot), die vor drei Jahren nach Kalifornien ausgewandert ist. Ihre Ankunft bringt die ohnehin fragile Harmonie schnell ins Wanken. Während Andréa bemüht ist, die Fassade der glücklichen Familie aufrecht zu erhalten, bricht ein Konflikt nach dem anderen ans Licht.

Alma hingegen sucht sich Objekte ihres Begehrens lieber in der Nachbarschaft. Praktisch jeder und jede käme für Alma in Frage – und wenn die Erregung Überhand nimmt, gibt es ja noch Stig, den jungen Mann bei der Sex-Hotline, der ihr hilft, sich Befriedigung zu verschaffen. Almas stärkste Sehnsucht aber gilt Artur, dem spröden Nachbarjungen. Als der jedoch ihren Avancen höchst tölpelhaft begegnet, gerät Alma in einen skandalös schlechten Ruf.

Arthur Vlaminck ist ein junger Absolvent der ENA, der elitären Nationalen Hochschule für Verwaltung. Er schafft es, eine Position als neuer Mitarbeiter im Stab des französischen Außenministeriums, dem Quai d’Orsay, zu erhalten. Dort wird er direkt dem französischen Außenminister Alexandre Taillard de Worms unterstellt. Dieser ist für sein lebhaftes Temperament, aber auch für sein Charisma bekannt und vertraut ihm „das Wichtigste“ an: die Sprache. Trotz der politischen Differenzen mit dem Minister passt sich Arthur Vlaminck dem System an und wird bald zu einem Konkurrenten für die verschiedenen Chefberater im Quai d’Orsay. Seine Hauptaufgabe besteht darin, Reden für den Außenminister zu schreiben. Das bedeutet, die richtigen Worte zu finden, so subtil wie möglich. Keine einfache Aufgabe für den jungen Mitarbeiter.
