Seit dem Öko-Kollaps der Erde lebt der größte Teil der Menschheit im All, in hoffungslos überfüllten Raumstationen. Die einzige Hoffnung, diesem Chaos zu entkommen, ist RHEA, ein paradiesischer Planet, 5 Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt. Die Geschichte von CARGO spielt auf dem heruntergekommenen Raumfrachter KASSANDRA, auf seinem Weg zur abgelegenen Station 42. Die junge Ärztin Laura ist als einzige wach an Bord. Der Rest der Besatzung: tiefgefroren im Kälteschlaf. Erst in vier Monaten wird Laura ihre lange Schicht überstanden haben. Während ihrer täglichen Kontrollgänge durch das gespenstisch leere Schiff hat Laura immer mehr das Gefühl, nicht alleine an Bord zu sein. Eine Erkundungsmission in dem dunklen und eiskalten Frachtraum endet in einem Fiasko. Der Rest der Besatzung wird geweckt. Ein Katz- und Mausspiel beginnt, in welchem nichts so ist, wie es scheint. Was verbergen die geheimnisvollen Frachtcontainer und wer oder was ist noch an Bord?
