Medizinstudentin Carla lebt in der Stadt Mexicali, ganz im Norden Mexikos, direkt an der Grenze zum US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien. Während Carla versucht, etwas Sinnvolles mit ihrem Leben anzustellen, hat ihr Bruder sich dafür entschieden, in den Drogenschmuggel einzusteigen. Zuletzt hat er seine Arbeitgeber allerdings für ein paar Dollar an den US-Grenzschutz verpfiffen. Als das Kartell das herausbekommt, wird Carlas Bruder getötet und auch die komplett unbeteiligte junge Frau steht plötzlich auf der Abschussliste der Gangster. Hals über Kopf muss sie ihre Heimat verlassen. Dabei flüchtet sie sich in einen alten Tunnel und landet durch diesen ungewollt in den Vereinigten Staaten. Dort versteckt sie sich in einem scheinbar leerstehenden Haus, das sich jedoch als CIA-Unterschlupf herausstellt. Kann Carla den Amerikanern trauen, wenn die noch immer auf ihren Fersen befindlichen Kartellkiller auftauchen?
