Seargent Brown und mehrere Soldaten sollen sieben gemeingefährliche Lebenslängliche von einer Goldmine nach Fort Green begleiten. Auf dem Weg wird der kleine Trupp von Banditen überfallen und bis auf Seargent Brown, der in zivil reist, alle Soldaten massakriert. Brown und die aneinandergeketteten Sträflinge müssen sich nun zu Fuß durch die winterliche Wildnis in das sechs Tagesmärsche entfernte Fort kämpfen. Ein Wettlauf mit dem Tod beginnt und jeglicher Rest Menschlichkeit verfliegt spätestens, als man merkt, dass die Ketten aus purem Gold geschmiedet sind.
