Von seiner Familie frustriert kehrt der britische Junggentleman Simon Murray (Paul Fox) seiner Heimat den Rücken und tritt im Jahre 1960 der französischen Fremdenlegion bei. Bereits kurze Zeit nach dieser schwerwiegenden Entscheidung wird der Junge mit anderen Rekruten aus aller Welt ins vom Bürgerkrieg zerrissene Algerien geschickt. Dort freundet er sich während seiner Grundausbildung mit dem Belgier Pascal Dupont (Tom Hardy) an und gewinnt den Respekt seiner Vorgesetzten. Doch beides wird auf die Probe gestellt, als klar wird, dass Pascal heimlich die Untergrundorganisation der Algerienfranzosen unterstützt, die dafür kämpft, Algeriens Unabhängigkeit von Frankreich zu verhindern. Als schließlich Frankreich einwilligen will, Algerien seine Unabhängigkeit zuzugestehen, entsteht eine Kluft zwischen den Soldaten der verschiedenen politischen Lager und zertrennt so auch Simon und Pascal. Plötzlich stehen ehemalige Kameraden auf verschiedenen Seiten.
