  In the first half of the 19th century, the French ornithologist Jean-Jacques Audubon travelled to America to depict birdlife along the Mississippi River. Audubon was also a gifted painter. His life’s work in the form of the classic book ‘Birds of America’ is an invaluable documentation of both extinct species and an entire world of imagination. During the same period, early industrialisation and the expulsion of indigenous peoples was in full swing. The gorgeous film traces Audubon’s path around the South today. The displaced people’s descendants welcome us and retell history, while the deserted vistas of heavy industry stretch across the horizon. The magnificent, broad images in Jacques Loeuille’s atmospheric, modern adventure reminds us at the same time how little - and yet how much - is left of the nature that Audubon travelled around in. His paintings of the colourful birdlife of the South still belong to the most beautiful things you can imagine.

The protagonists give their accounts of the unsurmounted past, the precarious present and their tentative steps into the future. Und genau dort schlägt der hochgerüstete Feind unerwartet zu.

  1967 wird der junge Student Chen Zhen von Peking aus in die Mongolei geschickt, um einem Stamm nomadischer Hirten Lesen und Schreiben beizubringen. Schon bei seiner Ankunft ist Chen von dem fremdartige Leben im unendlich scheinenden und atemberaubenden Grasland fasziniert. Sein Interesse gilt dabei vor allem den in der Wildnis lebenden und gleichermaßen gefürchteten wie verehrten Wölfen, zu denen die Hirten ein komplexes Verhältnis haben. Chen fängt an, die majestätischen Tiere eingehend zu studieren, doch als sie eines Tages von der chinesischen Regierung als Gefahr eingestuft werden, wird damit begonnen, einen Wolfswelpen nach dem anderen umzubringen. Chen gelingt es allerdings, zumindest eines der Tiere zu retten und fortan selbst aufzuziehen. Während sich zwischen den beiden eine besondere Freundschaft entwickelt, sind den verbliebenen Wölfen die Taten der Menschen durchaus bewusst und sie setzen zum Angriff auf deren Siedlungen an.

  Der erfolgreiche Anwalt Michael Gray (Eric Balfour) vertritt die miesesten Schurken der Stadt. Dass das irgendwann nach hinten losgeht, schien klar zu sein, denn ein Klient schiebt ihm einen Mord in die Schuhe. Nun wird er in das berüchtigte South River State Gefängnis gesperrt, wo er nicht nur der Tyrannei des sadistischen Aufsehers Sand (Bruce Greenwood) und des Gefängniswärters Ray Clement (Michael Rooker) ausgesetzt ist. Auch in seiner Zelle scheint etwas nicht mit rechten Dingen zuzugehen. Cell 213 ist berüchtigt dafür, dass kein Insasse sie jemals lebend verlassen hat.
