Der Hoffnung, neue Erkenntnisse über Chopins gewinnen zu können, steht die Sorge entgegen, manche allzu intimen Sätze des Briefverkehrs könnten den Nationalmythos des Komponisten beschädigen. In zwei Zeitebenen erzählt Tony Palmer das Leben Chopins und den Umgang mit seinem Mythos durch seine Nachfahren.
