Das junge Zebra Khumba kommt ohne Streifen am hinteren Teil des Körpers zur Welt- Seine Herdenmitglieder sind dadurch zutiefst verunsichert und als nach der Geburt auch noch eine Dürreperiode einsetzt, beginnen die mit Vorurteilen erfüllten Herdenmitglieder Khumba immer mehr auszuschließen. Als das Wasser immer knapper und die Not der Herde immer größer wird, beschließt Khumba alleine aufzubrechen, um seine vermeintlich verloren gegangenen Streifen wiederzufinden und das Wasser zurückzubringen. Auf seiner Reise begegnet er der Gnufrau Mama V, die sich dem üblichen Verhalten von Gnus widersetzt und keine hingebungsvolle Mutter sein möchte. Ironischer Weise kümmert sie sich hingebungsvoll um Strauß Bradley, mit dem sie zusammen durch die Wildnis zieht. Zusammen begeben sie sich auf die Suche nach einem verborgenen Wasserloch, deren Lage ihnen von einer mysteriösen Heuschrecke verraten worden ist.
