Ein junger Mexikaner hat im Sommer 1987 im texanischen El Paso keine großen Pläne. In den vergangenen Monaten ist der junge Mann gelangweilt, unglücklich und freudlos geworden. Seine einzigen Gefährten sind seine Eltern, da seine älteren Schwestern weggezogen sind und sein Bruder Bernardo im Gefängnis sitzt, worüber in der Familie jedoch niemand viel spricht.
