Die junge Amy Cole möchte dem Kleinstadtleben entfliehen und schreibt sich kurzerhand beim Militär ein. Cole plagen zunehmend moralische Gewissensbisse aufgrund der ungerechten Behandlung und der Folter der Insassen. In der Folge freundet sie sich mit dem Häftling Ali Amir an, für den sie Empathie und Mitgefühl entwickelt. So gut sie kann, versucht Cole ihre Pflicht für ihr Land zu erfüllen, muss sich aber auch der Avancen ihres Vorgesetzten Corporal Randy und dem deutlichen Hass einiger ihrer Kameraden erwehren.
