We wanted to make a film about a teenage mother. We met Joana in a casting that took place in Setubal, in the Bela Vista neighborhood. She appeared to us as a porcelain doll, small, fragile, pale, with a little hair bow. Little by little, she crumbled apart, revealing a charming complexity. We were conquered by the duality of strength and fragility, freedom and incarceration, joy and sorrow. The intimacy and complicity we were able to establish with her made this film possible. In Cat's Cradle, we share her with everyone else.

Karl möchte nicht nach Kopenhagen ziehen. Er liebt die Dünen, den Strand und das Meer in der abgelegenen Gegend, in der er mit seiner Mutter lebt. Aber er hat keine Wahl. Die Mutter muss wegen ihrer Arbeit in die Großstadt umziehen, und Karl geht mit. Die fremde Stadt ist laut, schrill und voller Verkehr, Menschen aus allen Kulturen bevölkern die Straßen und Geschäfte. In der Schule ist Karl mit seinem ländlichen Dialekt ein Außenseiter, und die anderen Jungs fangen an, ihn zu mobben. Gott sei Dank nimmt ihn Sawsan, ein Mädchen aus einer türkischen Familie, unter ihre Fittiche. Von ihr lernt Karl, wie man ordentlich dänisch spricht und was die coolen Sprüche sind. Das hilft. Aber auch Sawsan hat ihre Probleme. Sie wünscht sich nichts sehnlicher, als mit einem eigenen Song in einer Casting-Show im Fernsehen dabei zu sein. Doch ihr Vater sagt Nein, denn für ihn gehört seine Tochter nicht auf die Bühne. Da lässt Karl sich etwas einfallen.
