Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges im Jahr 1941 werden Tausende Juden in Weißrussland von den deutschen Besatzern ermordet. Bedauerlicherweise trifft das auch auf die Eltern von Zus Bielski, Tuvia Bielski und Asael Bielski zu. Nur sehr knapp gelingt aber wenigstens den drei Jungs die Flucht. Sie können sich in den nahegelegene Wäldern verstecken und starten einen Partisanenkampf gegen das Nazi-Regimes. Immer mehr jüdische Gefolgsleute schließen sich ihnen an. Zus ist aber die lasche Art seines Bruders Tuvia ein Dorn im Auge und so kommt es zwischen den beiden Brüdern immer wieder zum Streit. Als auch die Vermittlungsversuche von Asael scheitern, kommt es zum endgültigen Bruch. Statt ihre Kräfte gegen die Besatzer zu bündeln, kommt es nun zwischen den beiden Rivalen zu einem gnadenlosen Kampf ums Überleben…
