The film was shot over a period of three years, partly by the main characters themselves on their phones.

Shin Dong-Huyk was born on November 19, 1983 as a political prisoner in a North Korean re-education camp. He was a child of two prisoners who had been married by order of the wardens. He spent his entire childhood and youth in Camp 14, in fact a death camp. He was forced to labor since he was six years old and suffered from hunger, beatings and torture, always at the mercy of the wardens. He knew nothing about the world outside the barbed-wire fences. At the age of 23, with the help of an older prisoner, he managed to escape. For months he traveled through North Korea and China and finally to South Korea, where he encountered a world completely strange to him.

Der Fechter heißt Endel und ist Anfang der 1950er Jahre auf der Flucht. Weil die kommunistische Geheimpolizei unter Stalins Führung den Sportler ergreifen will, versteckt er sich in einer kleinen Stadt an Estlands Küste. Hier wird er zwar zunächst misstrauisch beäugt, findet aber dann doch eine Anstellung als Sportlehrer. Endel beginnt, die jungen Kinder in die Fechtkunst einzuführen und geht in dieser neuen Aufgabe voll auf. Wie viel Freude die Mädchen und Jungen mit ihrem neuen Lehrer haben und mit welcher Begeisterung Endel unterrichtet, entgeht auch der Lehrerin Kadri nicht und die zwei kommen sich näher. Als allerdings ein Fecht-Wettbewerb in Leningrad ausgetragen werden soll, wird Endel vor eine schwierige Wahl gestellt, denn wenn er dorthin fährt, bringt er sich selbst in Gefahr. Doch kann er die Kinder, für die er zur Vaterfigur geworden ist, einfach so im Stich lassen?
