Die 22-jährige Claudia lebt alleine in Guadalajara, Mexiko. Als sie mit einer Blinddarmentzündung im Krankenhaus landet, lernt sie Martha kennen, eine alleinerziehende Mutter von vier Kindern, die trotz ihrer AIDS-Erkrankung voller Lebensfreude ist. Als Martha Claudia nach ihrer OP einsam nach Hause gehen sieht, lädt sie die junge Frau zu sich nach Hause ein. Ohne großes Aufheben wird Claudia Teil von Marthas eigenwilliger, turbulenter Familie, in der sie erstmals Zusammenhalt, Spaß und gemeinsame Mahlzeiten erlebt. Zunächst ist die junge Einzelgängerin vom lebhaften Haushalt überfordert, fühlt sich der Familie aber bald zugehörig und wächst langsam in die Rolle der Ersatzmutter hinein.

Der junge Geistliche Fabian soll auf einer kleinen dalmatinischen Insel die Nachfolge des alten, beliebten Dorfpfarrers antreten. Doch das ist gar nicht so leicht, denn Fabian kann weder singen noch Boule oder Seniorenfußball spielen. Trotzdem will er unbedingt Gutes tun. Als ihm die himmelschreiend geringe Geburtenrate der Insel auffällt, hat Fabian seine Aufgabe gefunden: Gläubigervermehrung statt Beerdigungsalltag. Der Grund für das Übel ist schnell gefunden, denn der reumütige Kioskbesitzer Petar berichtet vom reißenden Kondom-Absatz auf der Insel. Fabian hat eine Idee: so ein Kondom lässt sich ziemlich gut mit einer Nadel durchstechen und so der göttliche Wille durch ein Hintertürchen wieder einlassen. In Kollaboration mit dem verrückten Dorfapotheker, der statt der Pille nur noch Vitamine verkauft, folgt schnell der gewünschte Effekt. Und das auch gegen den Willen der überrumpelten Dorfbewohner, die sich in unheiligen Allianzen und unorthodoxen Umständen wiederfinden.

Einzig seine sexuellen Abenteuer in der schwulen Szene bringen Nico die dringend benötigte Ablenkung. So treibt der Überlebenskünstler zwischen Hoffnung, Einsamkeit und Lust durch eine Großstadt voller Möglichkeiten. Nico muss zwar einsehen, dass er nicht nur seinen Mitmenschen, sondern auch sich selbst etwas vormacht, doch reift in ihm auch die Erkenntnis, dass der tatsächliche Erfolg seiner Reise in der Selbstentdeckung liegen kann.
