Emma ist herrisch, gehässig, gnadenlos. Doch dies ist nur die Hälfte der Wahrheit, weil der Regisseur bisher erst die Hälfte gezeigt hat. Szene für Szene deckt der Film unvermutete Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse auf und offenbart, warum die Bediensteten jede Erniedrigung bereitwillig über sich ergehen lassen. Sie können Emmas Tod nicht erwarten, weil sie erben wollen. Und selbst dann ist noch nicht alles eindeutig.
