Polanski wurde 1933 in Frankreich als Sohn eines Polen und einer Russin geboren und floh im Jahr 1937 nach Polen, weil er und seine Eltern in Frankreich unter der Judenverfolgung zu leiden hatten. Nach dem Überfall der Nazis auf Polen 1939 wurde er bei einem Bauern versteckt, seine Mutter wurde in Auschwitz ermordet, der Vater überlebte ein KZ in Österreich nur knapp. Nach dem Krieg studierte er in Krakau an der Filmhochschule und heiratete später die Schauspielerin Sharon Tate, die im Jahr 1969 kurz vor der Geburt ihres Kindes von Anhängern Charles Mansons ermordet wurde. In den Siebzigern wurde er in den USA wegen Verführung einer Minderjährigen verurteilt, weshalb er bis heute nicht mehr dort war, noch nicht einmal, um im Jahr 2003 den Regie-Oscar entgegenzunehmen, den er für "Der Pianist" verliehen bekam.
