Eine 500 Meter lange Leiter aus Licht, die sich Sprosse für Sprosse aufbaut und schließlich vom Boden bis in den Himmel reicht: Die „Sky Ladder”, die Himmelsleiter, ist eine Feuerwerkinstallation, von der Cai Guo-Qiang lange träumte. Jahrzehnte der Arbeit vergingen, bis der chinesische Feuerwerkskünstler sein meisterhaftes Kunstprojekt fertigstellen, zünden konnte. Der Prozess von der Idee zum Einsatz ist der erzählerische Rahmen in Kevin Macdonalds Dokumentarfilm über Cai Guo-Qiang. Macdonald zeigt, wie aus dem Jungen, der den Beginn von Maos Kulturrevolution als Neunjähriger erlebt, ein Künstler wird, als die Repression endete. Guo-Qiang Werk beschränkte sich nie auf Schießpulver und Feuerwerk – aber es ist die Kunst der farbenfrohen Explosionen, für die er bekannt ist. Kritisiert wurde der Chinese u. a. dafür, dass er sich mit seinen Beiträgen zu den Olympiafeierlichkeiten 2008 in den Dienst der chinesischen Regierung stellte…
