Thomas Jacob (Mikael Persbrandt) ist ein überaus erfolgreicher Musiker, der in Los Angeles wohnt. Mit jeder Faser seines Körpers lebt er für die Musik und kennt für diese Leidenschaft keine Grenzen. Doch als Thomas für ein neues Album in seine Heimat Dänemark zurückkehrt, wird sein Leben aus den Angeln gehoben. Denn seine erwachsene Tochter Julie (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen) stellt ihm seinen 11 Jahre alten Enkel vor, den er bis dahin noch nie gesehen hat. Schon bald muss sich Thomas widerwillig um Noa (Sofus Rønnov) kümmern. Finden die beiden anfangs nicht zueinander, so merken sie doch schnell, dass sie zumindest über die Musik eine Verbindung zueinander herstellen können. Doch dann geschieht etwas furchtbares und Thomas realisiert, dass er jetzt eine Entscheidung treffen muss, die sein bisheriges Leben für immer verändern wird!

Dort arbeitet zum Zeitpunkt seines Eintreffens ein junger, aufstrebender CIA-Analyst Douglas Freeman, welcher einer brutalen Befragung El-Ibrahims beiwohnen muss. Aufgrund dieses menschenverachtenden Verhörs stellt Douglas die Vorgehensweise seines Arbeitgebers in Frage und sucht nach einer plausiblen Rechtfertigung dieser unvertretbaren Strategie im Kampf gegen den Terrorismus.
