In den Siebzigern wurde er in den USA wegen Verführung einer Minderjährigen verurteilt, weshalb er bis heute nicht mehr dort war, noch nicht einmal, um im Jahr 2003 den Regie-Oscar entgegenzunehmen, den er für "Der Pianist" verliehen bekam.
