  Amy-Jo (Elle Fanning) lebt in den 70er Jahren zusammen mit ihrem Vater Joe (John Hawkes) in einem heruntergekommenen Hotel in einer noch heruntergekommeneren Gegend von Hollywood. Joe verbringt jedoch fast mehr Zeit mit Gefängnisaufenthalten, Drogenmissbrauch und Entzügen als mit Amy-Jos Erziehung.
