72 years have passed as deer herder Vukvukai lives in the depths of Chukotka. He is an old man full of energy and wisdom - the 'real man of the tundra' whose life can not be seen apart from by the deer. His people take care of a huge herd - over 14,000 deer. Their life is a non-stop struggle for survival and well-being in the most harsh weather conditions of Chaun-Chukotka. They deeply believe in the strength of tradition and so succeed in their struggle. The ancient culture of Nomadic Chukchi takes care of them, so they preserve and follow it. As far as it is now - their realm remains stable.

Every February, four dozen athletes are invited to Alaska to undertake a journey which will challenge their bodies and minds, their wills to succeed, and their wills to live. The Iditarod Trail Invitational is the worlds longest, toughest and most remote ultra marathon, challenging competitors to journey 1000 miles across the Alaskan tundra on bike, foot, or ski. More people summit Everest in an afternoon than have made it from Anchorage to Nome on a bicycle. But this year twenty-six racers will attempt the full 1000 miles of the Iditarod Trail. The fastest time recorded is 12 days. The longest is more than 30. It’s the unknowns that bring these elite athletes here year after year in search of purpose and excitement, but it’s those same unknowns that make this one of the most dangerous races on Earth. How willing are you to lose your toes, or your hands, or someone you love. That’s the consequence of not being prepared on the Iditarod Trail.

Doch das Flugzeug gerät mitten in einen Schneesturm und es kommt zum Absturz. Gestrandet in der eisigen Tundra machen sich die wenigen Überlebenden auf den Weg Richtung Süden. Dabei kämpfen sie nicht nur gegen Hunger und Kälte, denn auch ein Wolfsrudel, in dessen Jagdgebiet sie gelandet sind, hat längst ihre Fährte aufgenommen. Schnell stellen sie fest, dass sie zusammenarbeiten müssen, um schneller voran zu kommen und der drohenden Gefahr zu entgehen. Um die Teamfähigkeit der Gruppe steht es jedoch nicht besonders gut, so fällt es der heterogenen Gruppe der acht Überlebenden nicht leicht zusammen zu arbeiten. Aber Fehler und Egoismen darf sich bei diesem Kampf um Leben und Tod keiner erlauben, denn das würde die ganze Gruppe in Gefahr bringen.
