Die beiden merkwürdigen Cowboys Mark Allen (Christian Kane) und Chip Woolley (Skeet Ulrich) haben nicht wenige Flausen im Kopf. Mit Pferderennen konnten sie sich bisher halbwegs über Wasser halten, doch nun stehen sie kurz vor der Pleite. Sie müssen mehr Pferde unter ihre Fittiche nehmen und auch mal ein Rennen gewinnen. Mit „Mine that Bird“ finden und trainieren sie fortan ein widerspenstiges und krummbeiniges Pferd. Das Tier qualifiziert sich dann völlig überraschend für das Kentucky Derby, einem der wichtigsten Pferderennen überhaupt, und die beiden Cowboys stürzen sich in das Abenteuer ihres Lebens. Für den Höhepunkt des Wettkampfes begeben sich die beiden zusammen mit dem Ross nach Churchill Downs. Auf dem Weg dahin haben sie allerdings mit einer Reihe von Missgeschicken zu kämpfen, bevor sich die totalen Außenseiter zusammen mit Jockey Calvin Borel (als er selbst) schließlich im finalen Showdown mit der Rennsport-Elite messen dürfen.
