Minori is a head-strong photographer who is romantically involved with Kushida, her editor. On a photography assignment she gets into an argument with her subject, Ageha, a female erotic manga artist who, like Minori, is 30 and single. Shin'ichi, the journalist on the assignment, receives most of the blame for the failure of the project. Minori sleeps with Shin'ichi, then discovers that her own position is not as secure as she thought, when she suspects that Kushida is also involved with Ageha. The series of events causes Minori to reconsider her own lifestyle.

The poet Jean Sénac, also a radio host, chose to stay in Algeria after his country's independence in 1962. Ten years later, a protester and libertarian, he was monitored by the regime's police. His poems attract a popular audience and his show is a real success with young people. Also, when Hamid and Belkacem, two students, learn that the play they wrote and presented at the first national Algerian theater festival is downgraded under the pretext that they performed it in French, their pain will be alleviated by the presence behind the scenes by Jean Sénac who congratulates them. The latter will become close friends of the poet and witness his fight for the freedom and culture of Algerian youth. A fight which would lead Sénac to martyrdom: one night in August 1973, he was assassinated in the cellar which served as his apartment. Hamid is accused of the murder.

Nachdem das Team von "Average Joe’s" mit viel Glück die regionale Vorausscheidung überstanden hat, läuft alles auf den großen Showdown hinaus. Bevor es darauf eine Antwort gibt, bekommt Mackelway ein mysteriöses Fax: Ein Unbekannter schickt ihm ältere Vermisstenanzeigen, auf denen Kommentare „wie sieh genau hin“ und ein Kreis, durch den ein Strich gezogen ist, vermerkt sind. Die angestrengte Lektüre wird vom ersten echten Fall unterbrochen: Vertreter Harold Speck ist bestialisch genau auf der Grenze des Bundesstaats ermordet worden, am Tatort findet sich die gleiche Kreiszeichnung wie auf Mackelways Fax.

The star is a living being, and Laura takes her home to reattach its point with a band-aid. The little star has special powers and can make people fly, or bring inanimate objects to life.
