This is Just To Say was made in the summer of 1999 through a workshop opportunity offered by Inside Out Toronto Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival for queer youth. This is Just to Say documents several young men and women’s first queer experiences through interviews accomplished by simply approaching strangers on a busy Toronto street on a Sunday afternoon. Through invasive conversation This is Just to Say explores personal narrative and identity politics in the "post" era; a testament about being young and queer in 1999.

An ancient legend about fallen angels and an invisible vagabond called Belzebub: this is not fantasy, but the myths of the North-Western Danish region of Thy. The love story of sixteen-year-old Arturs is interrupted by the First World War. After losing his mother and his home, he finds some consolation in joining the army, because this is the first time national battalions are allowed in the Russian Empire. Also, no progress is made in the promised quick resolution of the war and timely return home. Within the notion that only he alone cares about returning home and that his homeland is just a playground for other nations, Arturs finds strength for the final battle and eventually returns home to start everything from scratch, just like his newly born country.

“There’s a bus stop I want to photograph.” This may sound like a parody of an esoteric festival film, but Canadian Christopher Herwig’s photography project is entirely in earnest, and likely you will be won over by his passion for this unusual subject within the first five minutes. Soviet architecture of the 1960s and 70s was by and large utilitarian, regimented, and mass-produced. Yet the bus stops Herwig discovers on his journeys criss-crossing the vast former Soviet Bloc are something else entirely: whimsical, eccentric, flamboyantly artistic, audacious, colourful. They speak of individualism and locality, concepts anathema to the Communist doctrine. Herwig wants to know how this came to pass and tracks down some of the original unsung designers, but above all he wants to capture these exceptional roadside way stations on film before they disappear.
