Karina arrives to a mansion to work as a governess of a group of singing children. She must take care of their education, and she decides to use music to teach them. Meanwhile, the record company where the children work is busy with another project. Their biggest star, Marta, is getting ready a song to represent Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest 1971. Carlos, the composer of the song, titled "En un mundo nuevo" ("In a new world") meets Karina in the mansion and starts feeling affection to the girl, something Marta, who is Carlos' girlfriend doesn't like at all. She is also jealous of Karina for her musical abilities, and when one day Marta catches Karina with Carlos singing a song composed for the governess, she gives him an ultimatum, if Karina doesn't leave the mansion at once, she will break her contract with the record company and won't sing "En un mundo nuevo" in the Eurovision Song Contest...

Erbarme dich - Matthäus Passion Stories is a labyrinthine narrative in which notables such as Peter Sellars, Emio Greco, Simon Halsey and painter Rinke Nijburg explain their special relationship with Bach’s St Matthew Passion to Ramón Gieling (Johan Cruijff: en un momento dado). They speak against the backdrop of a church which has fallen into disrepair, while a choir of homeless people and Pieter Jan Leusink’s Bach Choir & Orchestra rehearse the Passion. Leusink isn't just the conductor, he is one of the main characters himself, with a painful past in which this musical piece has played a dominant role. Stories from the others alternate seamlessly with this. We learn how the St Matthew Passion played a decisive role in the relations between men and women, fathers and sons, fathers and daughters, mothers and their unborn children, and finally that in spite of our differences we all find a common denominator in the secret of Bach's music.

The film tells the story of Omar, a construction worker from Villa Elisa, a small town in the province of Entre Ríos, Argentina, who rejects the idea that big screens may disappear. He will do anything he can to preserve that which he has held on to since he was a child, even though he has to build it with the remnants of what was.
