Aurinkoenergiaa tutkiva Michael Mitchell on eronnut hallituksen tutkimusohjelmasta, kun Yhdysvaltain armeija päättää käyttää tutkimusta ja kehitystyön tuloksia sen omaan aseohjelmaan. Jane Whitlow jatkaa projektia kehittääkseen aseen, jonka ympäristövaikutuksia ja seurauksia puolustusministeri ei halua selvittää - tavoitteena on vain saada aurinkoenergialla toimiva avaruuspuolustusjärjestelmä nopeasti valmiiksi, ilman turhia testejä. Kun asetta testataan, se aiheuttaa auringonpilkkuja sekä ennennäkemättömän auringon purkauksen ja massiivinen plasmapilvi suuntautuu kohti maata. Puolustusministeri lavastaa epäonnistumisen, ja sen seuraukset Michaelin syysksi ja pidättää hänet. Jane tietää, että Michael on ainoa ihminen maailmassa, jolla on mahdollisuus muuttaa aseen toimintaa ja hajoittaa plasmapilvi ennen sen saapumista kokonaan maahan. Jane päättää auttaa Michaelia pakenemaan vankilasta - vain nero pystyy pelastamaan maailman täydelliseltä tuholta.
