Ravinnonsaanti näyttää ratkeavan ainakin hetkeksi, mutta varsinainen ongelma on isompi. Watney on edelleen jumissa Marsissa, mutta luottaa kekseliäisyyteensä löytääkseen keinon viestittää Maahan olevansa elossa. Lopulta hänet huomataan Maassa ja NASAn kansainvälinen tiimi tiedemiehiä alkaa tekemään väsymättä töitä tuodakseen tämän yksinäisen ”marsilaisen” kotiin.
