Näin koulutat lohikäärmeesi 2 animaatiotrilogian jännittävä toinen osa tekee paluun sankarillisen viikinki Hikotuksen ja hänen uskollisen lohikäärmeensä Hampaattoman uskomattomaan maailmaan. Hikotus on kasvanut jo melkein aikuiseksi. Paksua skottiaksenttia vääntävät viikingit ja hurjalta näyttävät lohikäärmeet elävät sulassa sovussa Berkin vuoristokylässä. Hikotusta odottaa kuitenkin vastuullinen haaste. Hänestä pitäisi tulla isänsä, viikinkipäällikkö Stoickin työn jatkaja. Hikotus ja Hampaaton kohtaavat lohikäärmeenpyytäjä Eretin, joka varustaa armeijaa miehelle nimeltä Drago. Siinä missä Hikotus ja hänen kylänsä asukkaat ovat rakentaneet molemminpuolisen kunnioituksen ja yhteistyösuhteen ihmisten ja lohikäärmeen välille, Drago pitää lohikäärmeitä villieläiminä, jotka eivät tarvitse inhimillistä kohtelua. Dragosta ja hänen armeijastaan tulee uhka Berkin kylälle, ja Hikotuksen ja Hampaattoman tehtäväksi tulee suojella rauhaa ja turvata viikinkien ja lohikäärmeiden tulevaisuus.

Kaupungin katujen alla majailevat pelätyt boksitrollit, jotka tarinoiden mukaan varastelevat kaupunkilaisten kalleimpia asioita: lapsia ja juustoja. Näin kerrotaan, mutta todellisuudessa boksitrollit ovatkin leppoisaa porukkaa. Pienet boksitrollit asuvat maanalaisissa luolissa ja pukeutuvat vanhoihin pahvilaatikoihin, joihin voi tarpeen tullen piiloutua kuin kilpikonna kuoreensa. Ne keräävät kaupunkilaisten pois heittämiä tavaroita ja rakentelevat niistä jännittäviä mekaanisia laitteita. He huolehtivat myös ihmispoika Egusta, joka on kasvanut boksitrollien keskuudessa pienestä asti. Kun ilkeä tuholaistorjuja Sieppo alkaa jahdata boksitrolleja päästäkseen juustoseurapiireihin, boksitrollit ovat pulassa. Rohkean Winnie-tytön avulla Egun on saatava apua maanalaiselle perheelleen. Myös boksitrollien on rohkaistuttava ja osoitettava, että heistä löytyy särmää.
