Teinien välille syntyy nopeasti ystävyys, jolla olisi potentiaalia kehittyä joksikin suuremmaksikin, mutta Hazel asettaa sairautensa takia tietoiset rajat itselleen ja tunteilleen. Hazel on mukautunut elämään elämää, jossa hän voi toivoa asioita, mutta ei usko niiden toteutumiseen. Augustus kuitenkin osoittaa, että elämä ei voi olla pelkkää odotusta.
