Tämä ajaa hänet törmäyskurssille koulun rehtorin, kommunistisen byrokraatin kanssa. Endel oppii rakastamaan ja pitämään huolta lapsista, joista suuri osa on neuvostomiehityksen jäljiltä orpoja. Miekkailusta muodostuu lapsille itseilmaisun muoto ja Endelistä heille miehen malli. Rehtori selvittää Endelin taustan. Lapset haluavat lähteä Leningradiin valtakunnalliseen koululaisten miekkailuturnaukseen. Endel joutuu tekemään valinnan; viekö hän lapset Leningradiin ja riskeeraa oma vapautensa vai aiheuttaako hän heille pettymyksen valitsemalla oman turvallisuutensa ja ikuisen pakoilun.
