  1800-luvun Suomen rannikkoseudulla nuori 17-vuotias Maija avioituu vasten tahtoaan kalastajamies Jannen kanssa. He muuttavat karulle ja syrjäiselle Myrskyluodon saarelle, jossa selviytyminen on päivittäistä raskasta raatamista.
