Fieldsin huomatessa, että alueella riehuu sarjamurhaaja, joka käyttää Poen tarinoita inspiraation lähteenään niin hän päättää palkata Poen auttamaan tutkimuksissa. Panokset kovenevat, kun näyttää siltä, että joku Poen lähellä olevista saattaisi olla murhaajan seuraava kohde. Kaikkien dekkaritarinoiden "isän" on otettava käyttöön omat päätelmänsä ratkaistakseen tämän pähkinän ennen kuin on liian myöhäistä.
