Kun äiti ja tytär löydetään raa'asti murhattuna 1800-luvun Baltimoressa, etsivä Emmett Fields tekee hämmästyttävän löydön: murha muistuttaa läheisesti paikallisessa lehdessä ollutta kuvitteellista tarinaa, jonka on kirjoittanut Edgar Allan Poe. Juuri kun Poe on poliisin kuulusteluissa niin tapahtuu uusi kuvottava murha, joka sekin näyttäisi perustuvan Poen suosittuun kertomukseen. Fieldsin huomatessa, että alueella riehuu sarjamurhaaja, joka käyttää Poen tarinoita inspiraation lähteenään niin hän päättää palkata Poen auttamaan tutkimuksissa.
