Tanukit pystyvät muodonmuutoksiin, joten vastarinnan keskeinen keino on säikytellä ja ällistyttää ihmiset pelkäämään metsiä. Pahansisuinen vanha heimopäällikkö Gonta, viisas guru Tsurugame, tietäjämuori Oroku, sekä nuoruuden innolla koheltava Shoukichi järjestävät sabotaaseja, haamuparaateja ja muita ympäristöliikkeelle soveliaita iskuja. Työmaa saadaan väliaikaisesti pysäytettyä mutta ihmisiä on liikaa. Yhä uusia koneita jyrisee metsän kimppuun. Eikö metsille ja tanukeille tosiaan ole tulevaisuutta uljaassa uudessa ihmisten maailmassa?
