Tulva on hukuttamassa maanpinnan alleen, mutta onneksi neuvokkaat eläimet ovat rakentaneet arkin, jonne kaikki ovat tervetulleita, tai ainakin melkein kaikki... Dave ja hänen poikansa Finny ovat värikkäitä, kömpelöitä ja kovin eriskummallisen näköisiä otuksia, joiden ainoa mainittava taito on rakentaa hyviä pesiä. Laivan kapteenina toimiva leijona ei suostu päästämään pörröistä kaksikkoa mukaan pitäen heitä aivan liian omituisina. Neuvokas Dave ei anna periksi ja kekseliäissä valepuvuissaan he ujuttautuvat kissapetoihin kuuluvien äiti Hazelin ja hänen tyttärensä Leahin vanavedessä lipuntarkastajien ohi arkkiin. Kaikki ei kuitenkaan suju suunnitellusti, kun Finny ja Leah tipahtavat yli laidan veden vietäviksi vanhempien jatkaessa arkin kyydissä kohti kaukana siintävää ulappaa...
