Elokuva kertoo uruguaylaisen rugby-joukkueen lentoturmasta vuonna 1972. Chileen matkalla ollut kone joutui onnettomuuteen karuissa ja hyytävissä olosuhteissa Andien vuoristossa. Pelaajat saavat ujutettua matkaseurakseen myös muutaman läheisen ystävänsä ja perheenjäsenensä tukijoukoikseen. Lämpimissä tunnelmissa aloitettu matka alkaa muuttumaan nopeasti helvetilliseksi painajaiseksi, kun lentokone syöksyy Andien vuoristoiselle maaperälle Osa lentokoneen matkustajista kuolee jo lentokoneen törmätessä maahan ja haljetessa kahtia. Osa loukkaantuu ja kuolee myöhemmin - osa jäätyen hengiltä, osa kuihtuen pois ravinnon puutteessa. Osa kuitenkin selviytyy, ja heidän selviytymistarinansa ja neuvokkuutensa mahdottomissa oloissa ovat elokuvan keskiössä.
