Jaken saapuminen tietysti ravistelee lasten vakiintunutta yhteisöä ja tietysti asettaa heidät vaaraan, kun pahat eriskummalliset käyttävät poikaa hyväkseen kätketyt lapset löytääkseen. Heidän on löydettävä voimiensa lisäksi älynsä, rohkeutensa ja muutkin sisäiset voimavaransa pelastaakseen itsensä ja aikuiset suojelijansa.

Viidakkokirjasta on tehty useita elokuvasovituksia, joista tunnetuin on viidakkopoika Mowglin tarinoista ideoitu Walt Disneyn klassikkoanimaatio Viidakkokirja (1967). Teknisesti taiturimainen elokuva on suurelta osin tehty tietokoneella, mitä ei yllättävää kyllä kovin helpolla huomaa lopputuloksesta. Miljööt on luotu kokonaan tietokoneilla ja eläimet ovat perinteisten tehosteiden ja digitehosteiden saumatonta yhteispeliä.
