Gene Kellyn ja Stanley Donenin Amerikkalainen Pariisissa menestyi hienosti, ja menestystä haluttiin hyödyntää nopeasti. Niin syntyi Laulavat sadepisarat, jota on estoitta kehuttu kaikkien aikojen parhaaksi musikaaliksi. Useimmat sen lauluista ovat samalta ajalta, jonne tapahtumatkinsijoittuvat, eli 1920–30-lukujen taitteesta. Tuolloin äänielokuva alkoi vallata alaa, eikä ilman leffan kuvaamia kommelluksia.
