Tom Ripley on lahjakas monellakin tavalla. Hän osaa valehdella, väärentää nimikirjoituksia ja muuntautua lähes keneksi tahansa, eikä hän ole vielä jäänyt kiinni. Mutta toisaalta hän ei ole rikastunutkaan. Tom palkataan tuomaan vanha opiskelukaveri Euroopasta kotiin äveriään isänsä luokse.
