In February 1945, Jules Ternes returns to Luxembourg. To escape conscription, he fled the country and joined the resistance movement in France. His sister Mathilde is now engaged to Armand, the leader of the local resistance and his girlfriend Leonie has another man in her life. Jules nevertheless resumes a relationship with her and accepts a post as an auxiliary policeman. When Leonie is assassinated along with the German farmers she works for, the life Jules was struggling to rebuild collapses. The ensuing investigation will reveal grey areas of the Occupation along with the efforts made in high places to cover them up.

Tanskalaiset ovat suojelemassa paikallista väestöä mutta keinot ovat vähissä. Asetta kannetaan ennemminkin varustuksen osana, ei voimankäytön vahvana välineenä. Kun tanskalaisjoukon sotilas haavoittuu, homma kääntyy hetkessä turhautumisesta jopa kostoa etsiville poluille. Miksi pahikset saavat riehua kenenkään estämättä. Huono päätös johtaa lopulta vielä huonompiin ratkaisuihin. Siviilejä kuolee, komppanianjohtajaa syytetään sotarikoksesta. Kotona odottavan perheen tunnelmat ovat alakuloiset. Isän saapuessa kotiin, piinaavat syyllisyyden muistot antavat perheelle uuden vaikean vastustajan - isää uhkaa vuosien vankeus. Syyttäjällä on on omat ennakkoasenteet syytettyä kohtaan ja oikeudenkäynti menee henkilökohtaiseksi pätemiseksi ja arvovaltataisteluksi. Onko parempi jopa valehdella, perheen yhtenäisyyden nimissä.

Virolaiset joutuivat siis taistelemaan toisiaan vastaan sodassa, jossa he olivat pakotettuja sotimaan muiden kuin omiensa puolesta. Vuonna 1944 virolaiset olivat joutuneet suurvaltapolitiikan välikappaleiksi ja kävi miten kävi, virolaiset kansakuntana häviäsivät. Valter Hein ja Karl Tammik ovat Sinimäillä ennen muuta virolaisina puolustamassa isänmaansa itsenäisyyttä, eivät Suur-Saksan rajoja. Pojat ovat valmiita pyyhkimään takalistonsa Hitlerin kuvalla, jonka saavat puoluepampulta kunnianosoituksena hyvin tehdystä työstä. Ilman saksalaisia ei kuitenkaan ole toivoakaan vastarinnasta. Syyskuun puolessa välissä kaikki on Viron kohdalta ohi. Puna-armeija ajaa Virossa saksalaisia takaa kohdaten usein heidän sijaan virolaisia Waffen-SS -joukkoja.
